The Great South Bay: Our Playground
According to a bay biographer, "The Great South Bay extends for 42 miles in the space between Long Island and Fire Island. The average depth is 1.3 meters, and the water itself is a unique estuary that combines the salt water of the Atlantic Ocean with freshwater sources that feed the bay from across Long Island. Long Island's Great South Bay has been a microcosm of life in the New World dating back to the time before Europeans settled here in the 1600s. In many ways, the story of the Bay and its people has been the story of America."
